Silver Sneakers getting local seniors fit

These are the familiar sounds heard in a SilverSneakers Tai Chi class, a fitness program for seniors, here on GCC's campus.
SilverSneakers was first introduced to GCC in 1997 and has grown to have 1200 members, of whom nearly 700 are currently active. Members take part in classes including yoga, aerobics, water exercise, cardio activities, strength training and more.
"My problem is that I want to do it all!" said Beverly Harlow. Fortunately for all seniors, if time allows, you are welcome to do so. More than 20 classes are offered throughout the week, both in the mornings and afternoons.
The program is offered in partnership with select Medicare health plans to those who are currently on Medicare. Yet, while those eligible for Medicare are welcome to join at no additional cost, guests are invited to participate in SilverSneakers exercise classes as long as space permits.
Those who attend have nothing but good things to say about the classes. Six-year SilverSneakers member Wanda Miller raves, "I love Tai Chi. It gets to your innards. It really influences how you feel inside."
As happy as members are to attend, Senior Advisor Susie Kimball is just as happy to provide.
"I have the knowledge to help individuals make healthy lifestyle changes which will indeed help them lead a happy and healthy life," she said. "Through these activities, many seniors can perform every day living activities much easier."
If you are interested in joining the SilverSneakers fitness program, new members will receive a certificate for a free equipment orientation and program design. A personal trainer will familiarize you with the facility and available equipment, and design for you an individual cardiovascular and weight program to meet your personal needs.

I think most seniors would want to know more about this program without having to call a long distance phone number. If this was started in 1997, why did it take so long to be discovered here? Just because we are in Knoxville, Tn. (Continued…)
