Mary (real name held by request), a single friend of Heithoff's, adds, "As a woman, you need to be especially careful. I know it's untruthful, but I never use my real name."
"I use a pseudonym until I'm completely sure of the person," Mary says. "Then later I explain that I was using the fake name for my protection. I've never had anyone object to that."
Keeping friends aware of your activities is something else you can do to safeguard yourself when you decide to make the virtual friendship a reality.
"I can't stress how important it is to always tell a friend about your plans when you are serious about taking a relationship off-line," Mary says.

If you find yourself in a setting where you don't feel comfortable, politely excuse yourself, and call your friend to say you are heading home.
Don't be embarrassed to contact the police department for advice if you feel you are in any danger. Your safety should always come first.
